50 people, 57.5 kilos of trash and 2200 cigarette butts: when we act together, change happens.
Today, Central Park in Kirchberg once again became the stage for World Cleanup Day in Luxembourg for 2025. Fifty volunteers came together with one mission: to give nature a break from trash.
This time we were honored by the presence of Tilly Metz, Member of the European Parliament and participants from the European Parliament Liaison Office in Luxembourg, standing side by side with our community to show that environmental action belongs to everyone. Thanks to our beloved partners: EU Climate Pact Luxembourg, Sembeza Africa, Pick It Up, Sea Shepherd Luxembourg, SINGA Luxembourg and youngcaritas to make this day so special! And thanks to RTL Luxembourg, the action echoed far beyond the park and this is trully important not just for us but for our environment!
This local effort was part of the world’s largest civic movement, which in recent years has mobilized over 114 million volunteers across 211 countries, removing hundreds of thousands of tonnes of waste.
Community Power in Action
The volunteers came from every background you can imagine: kids, parents, elderly, refugees, students, and workers. Different stories, same goal: protecting our only home, our planet.
Together we collected 57,5 kg of litter and, very importantly: 11 liters of cigarette butts (11 liters), one of the most toxic pollutants in nature (1 single butt can pollute up to 1000 lts of water, read the study here). Although we didn’t reach the 160+ kgs from last year, we were surprised since we’ve cleaned this park area 4 times in the last year.
Every bag filled, every cigarette butt, was proof that small actions add up to big impact.
The atmosphere was one of unity and purpose. Although we got way more people than registered, volunteers were equipped with gloves and bags and most of them with litter pickers, hoops and yellow vests.
Why Cleanups Matter More Than Ever
The numbers are alarming:
- 8 million tonnes of plastic enter our oceans every year.
- By 2050, there could be more plastic than fish in the sea.
- In Luxembourg alone, 216 kg of litter per kilometre are found along motorways, and 103 kg/km along national roads.
- The state spends about €1,2 million annually on roadside litter cleanup only.
Even in one of the world’s cleanest countries, waste pollution persists and it’s our collective responsibility to change that.
